What to Expect
The drive between Anchorage and Girdwood is one of the most scenic sections of our route. The main portion of the drive is along Turnagain Arm where it’s possible to get a glimpse of Dall sheep, harbor seals, and even beluga whales.
Turnagain Arm has one of the most dramatic tidal exchanges in the world. If you get lucky, you may even get a view of the Turnagain Arm bore tide - a 6 to 10-foot tall wave that forms when an extreme low tide transitions to an extreme high tide. You can see smaller bore tides throughout the year but the most dramatic ones happen within a few days of a full moon or new moon.
Just outside of Anchorage is Potter Marsh, which is a popular location for bird watchers to get a peek at some of Alaska’s native birdlife.
